The Haibu, part of the Ishi Kiri collection, is inspired by the traditional Japanese paper-folding art of origami. It explores the pleats and creases of paper in multi-dimensional forms to create dramatic stone surfaces. The Haibu takes on the hexagon forms found in bee hives. The carved inner levels of the Haibu accentuate the shadows on the surface, creating more dimension.
Like most of our work, the Haibu is crafted using an intricate and customized manufacturing process. This begins with drafting rough prototypes on paper, feeding directives into a Computer Numerical Controlled (CNC) milling machine, and then finishing the machine-cut panels by hand to add a human touch to the digitally-fabricated product.
The Haibu is available in modular panels measuring 24” X 24” in four material choices: Graphite Gray Granite, Crèma Limestone, Taj White Marble, and Pristine White Marble. The patterns on the Haibu are customizable and can be interpreted to suit specific project requirements across varied scales and typologies.
